Research interests

The research topics that I develop, with PhD students and collaborators, focus on the experimental characterization and modeling of flow and transport processes in porous and fractured media. We investigate in particular the effective behaviors that emerge from the flow heterogeneity, with an emphasis on effective transport behaviors, including solute dispersion, mixing and chemical reactions.

These fundamental studies are relevant to a range of important applications, including water resources management, contaminant transport and remediation, Carbon sequestration, subsurface energy recovery (oil, gas, mining, geothermal energy) and the assessment of associated environmental risks.

The approaches that we have taken for studying this topic include : numerical simulation of flow and transport in heterogeneous media, theoretical development of effective reactive transport models, inverse methods for imaging the flow heterogeneity with hydro-geophysical methods, conservative and reactive tracer tests for investigating transport processes in the laboratory and in the field.
