Séminaire de Philip BARNES (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research -NIWA-, Wellington, New Zealand)

Date : 7 novembre 2007, 11h

Titre : The Southern Alpine fault, New Zealand.

Lieu : salle de conférences du CAREN (bât 14B RDC)

Résumé : The Alpine Fault has long been recognised as one of Earth’s major plate boundary structures, yet it is only in recent years that geophysical and bathymetric data have enabled us to determine the structure of the southern 230 km of the fault west of Fiordland. Marine surveys in 1998, 2003 and 2004 now provide unprecedented high-resolution bathymetric data, seismic reflection profiles, dated samples, and seabed photography. In this seminar I will outline the structure, recent evolution, and tectonic geomorphology of the fault and its sedimentary basins, summarise data relevant to glacial history, present new slip rates derived from dextral displacements of dated surfaces, and discuss the role of the fault in terms of plate boundary deformation.
