Titre : The dynamics of a high-relief model landscape.

Résumé : We investigated the role of local base-levels on the development of mountainous topography in a model landscape. The experimental apparatus is an erosion box in which two opposing panels are able to slide independently, so simulating base-level fall or rise across an emerging topography. Rainfall is generated by an ultra-fine misting apparatus mounted overhead. The evolution of model topography is observed and photographed using an overhead camera. Digital topography is generated from a 1mm resolution laser and sediment flux measured using a unique device termed the ‘fluxometer’. Our model landscape exhibits a surprising degree of autogenic variability including in increasing length-scale : landsliding, knickpoint propagation, ‘river’ capture events, catchment reorganisation and drainage divide migration. At the longest length-scale drainage divide mobility results in very different erosive ‘histories’ on either side of the divide.
